Things are heating up over at Supernatural.  We’ve already heard news that Adrianne Palicki will return as Sam’s dead girlfriend from the Pilot and news that Lucifer has been cast, but now comes more news that makes season 5 sound like it’s getting back to basics.

Meg is coming back, or rather, the demon that possessed Meg will return for Supernatural season 5.  Eric Kripke told TV Guide Magazine that he’s been curious about what happened to the missing demon, and it seems he’s finally come up with a way to bring her back.  However, she won’t be quite the same.

The old Meg Nicki Aycox is busy on the new TNT drama Dark Blue, so when the Meg demon returns, she’ll be played by Rachel Miner, who received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work on Guiding Light and was briefly married to actor Macauley Culkin.

Season 4 of Supernatural ended with Lucifer rising, and now, he’s here.  Michael Ausiello from EW.com has confirmed that actor Mark Pellegrino will join Supernatural as the Devil.  Who is Mark Pellegrino, you ask?

Well, if you’re a Lost fan, you certainly know him as Jacob, the shadowy ruler of the Island who finally appeared in the season5 finale, only to be killed off by Ben.  On that show I actually predicted that Jacob was the Devil, so it looks like I was right, only with the wrong show.

Pellegrino also starred on Dexter as Rita’s abusive ex-husband, so we know he can play an ominous bad guy.  For Supernatural, this casting is huge, mostly because of Pellegrino’s recent Lost connection, which earned him plenty of new fans and should help with a lot of buzz for his new role as Lucifer.

The title says it all. According to Variety, Supernatural will return for the start of its fifth season September 10, 2009. The show will remain in its usual 9:00 time slot but instead of Smallville, the new series Vampire Diaries will take the lead at 8:00.

September 10 is quite early for the start of the new season but it jives with reports that the show will be back in production on July 2. Sounds like The CW is trying to beat the other networks to the punch, which is particularly important with Fringe moving into the Thursday slot as of September 18.

Not having to wait until the end of September for the return of Sam and Dean? Priceless.

Jensen tells us that he imagines the boys have a crucial, but not necessarily pivotal, role to play in the war between heaven and hell. (Think of Jim Beaver‘s Bobby and the Winchesters more as lieutenants and corporals than generals or field marshals.)
