Jason Manns on Music, Movies, & Twisting Jensen’s Arm

When the perfect song meets a poignant scene in a TV episode, careers are made. Shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “One Tree Hill,” and “The O.C.” have lifted musical artists from obscurity into iTunes heavy rotation. It happens all the time. Singer/songwriter Jason Manns managed to do something far more remarkable, becoming a “Supernatural” fan favorite via word-of-mouth (and YouTube) long before his music was ever played on the show.

In 2007, Manns’ longtime friend, “Supernatural” star Jensen Ackles, flew to England to do the first “Supernatural” fan convention. Manns sensed an opportunity. “I told Jensen, ‘Ask them if they want music,’ and they ended up flying me out to play a concert on Saturday night,” he tells Zap2it.

It wasn’t Manns’ first convention. His friend Christian Kane, of “Angel” and “Leverage” fame, introduced him to the scene. (We know – Manns has friends in high places. We’d like an invite to their BBQs, too.) Read more… »

Jensen Enjoyed Directing – “It Was Cool”

The CW star Jensen Ackles has revealed that he enjoyed directing an episode of Supernatural. Ackles, who plays Dean, stepped behind the camera for the fourth edition of the show’s upcoming sixth season.

“It was a lot of work,” he told Digital Spy at Comic-Con. “But it was cool in the fact that I’ve never really approached a script with that kind of universal outlook on it. I was doing one character for five years – that’s where my focus is when I read a script. So to then bring that back and have to really take it all in and make decisions on every bit of the script as opposed to just my character… It was cool, it was refreshing, it was kind of invigorating.”

“Supernatural” Season Six Will Involve ‘Monster Mystery’

Producer Sera Gamble has revealed that the upcoming sixth season of Supernatural will involve a “monster mystery”. Gamble previously confirmed that the new episodes would see Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) battle “more monsters”. She has now told Entertainment Weekly that the brothers will begin investigating why the creatures have begun acting strangely.

“Sam and Dean are looking into the fact that monsters are acting off-pattern,” said the showrunner. “It’s sort of a post-apocalyptic landscape and monsters are acting in various weird ways. It’s a monster mystery.”

Additional “Supernatural” Spoilers

Ask Ausiello posted some upcoming “Supernatural” spoilers. Do not continue reading if you want to remain unspoiled! If you don’t care, happy reading!

Question: Did you get any Supernatural scoop at press tour? —Jackie
Ausiello:
Sure did. Considering the theme of the season is monsters, it’s probably no surprise that the first big mystery concerns, er, monsters. “Sam and Dean are looking into the fact that monsters are acting off-pattern,” explains exec producer Sera Gamble. “It’s sort of a post-apocalyptic landscape and monsters are acting in various weird ways. It’s a monster mystery.” Gamble is also hard at work on an episode that pokes fun at the Twilight phenomenon. “I was just doing a bit of work on the script today with [series creator] Eric [Kripke] and he was like, ‘So what is this reference to dropping an apple?’ I was like, ‘You don’t know the dropping an apple thing? It’s from Twilight!’ I was like, ‘Come over here! You have to watch the promo!’ There are a lot of references to Twilight and our former [timeslot companion] Vampire Diaries.”

CW Exec Teases About the Future of “Supernatural”

The CW’s Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff has revealed that Supernatural could run for longer than six seasons. Creator Eric Kripke had intended the series to end after its original five-year story arc was complete. However, it was later announced that the drama would return for a sixth season.

Ostroff told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour: “I think we’re all feeling really enthusiastic about Supernatural. Everybody on the show still feels that there’s a lot of juice left in the characters, and we hope it goes on for more seasons, for sure.”

Series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are currently only contracted until the end of the sixth season. Ostroff also revealed that the show would return to the storytelling format of the first season, featuring standalone episodes and one-off villains. Read more… »

“Supernatural” To Tackle the Vampire Obsession

Hold on to your Vervain and copies of Twilight, fangbangers. Supernatural is about to have some fun with your favorite vein-drainers. “We’re doing an episode about how vampires pretending to be Edward Cullen or the Salvatore brothers or Bill Compton are bad for you,” Supernatual showrunner Sera Gamble tells TV Guide Magazine.

At the CW/Showtime/CBS party during the annual Television Critics Association press tour, the creepy drama’s exec producer revealed that one of Season 6′s upcoming episodes (tentatively titled “Live Free or Twi-Hard”) will take fans’ ongoing obsession with undead hotties and hand it to Dean and Sam for a little skewering.

“There’s a mythology reason [as to why] we are revisiting a lot of monsters we’ve dealt with before on the show…including vampires,” says Gamble. “And when we were conceptualizing a vampire episode, we thought, ‘Wow there’s never been a better time to be a vampire.’ Chicks are just throwing themselves at them! They think that ‘vampire’ equals ‘I’m not going to try to have sex with you.’” Of course, in a world where vamps actually exist, that kind of thinking can get you killed. Or worse. “They will still take advantage of our children! They will turn you into a vampire or eat you.”
