The CW renews ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Vampire Diaries,’ ‘Gossip Girl’ and two more!

The CW just announced early renewals of five shows for next season. Ready?

Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and 90210 are all coming back, along with a first-ever all-star edition of America’s Next Top Model.

All will return next fall. None are huge surprises — Vampire Diaries is the network’s biggest hit, Gossip and 90210 are solid-ish and Friday’s Supernatural has helped keep the network strong on TV’s toughest night. Doing an all-star edition of veteran Top Model also makes sense as a way to potentially boost its numbers after 16 cycles. As for the shows that have not been renewed…

The CW brass still has a few pilots to watch for potential fall season candidates, so final decisions are not yet made on the rest of the network’s shows. Still awaiting a CW verdict: Hellcats, Nikita and One Tree Hill — which must have set some sort of record at this point having been a bubble show for the past eight years.

‘Supernatural’ Ackles ‘loved Old West ep’

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has admitted that he enjoyed shooting an upcoming Wild West episode of the show.

Last month, showrunner Sera Gamble revealed that the installment will see Dean (Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) transported back in time to the Old West.

“The western episode was one of those ‘woo hoo’ moments,” Ackles told Zap2it. “It’s kind of every little boy’s dream to do a showdown, and we got to do that.”

The actor added that it had been “gratifying” to work with former Heroes star Matthew John Armstrong, who plays the ghostly Elias Finch.

“I caught myself just watching Matt,” he admitted. “He had this long monologue [in one scene] and did a really good job, and I just got caught up in watching him work, and then realised that it was my line.”

CW pushes ‘Smallville,’ ‘Supernatural’ — Here’s why

The CW has pushed back the anticipated return of Smallville and Supernatural — by one week.

Why oh why? Are they afraid of Fringe?

Here’s the reason, according to a CW insider:

The network wanted a chance to re-peat tonight’s return of Vampire Diaries and Nikita on Friday to give their midseason debuts some additional sampling. Diaries, in particular, is going up against Idol. Plus, there’s some local market pre-emptions that are going to mess with the scheduling of tonight’s shows in certain cities (Chicago and Baltimore, if you must know).

So … there. See, it’s not really an exciting answer, and it’s probably more complicated than you wanted, but it all makes sense, and doesn’t mean anything bad for Smallville and Supernatural aside from having to wait another week, right?

“Supernatural” 6.01 – Exile on Main Street Promo

nally, we’ve got some new “Supernatural” footage to work with! The Sept. 24 premiere is just two short weeks away. After a year of living in domestic bliss with his girlfriend and her kid, Dean (Jensen Ackles) will find out that Sam (Jared Padalecki) has been alive all along. Seeing as Dean has presumably been grieving for his brother all along, this is sure to go over spectacularly.

In the Season 6 promo released by The CW, Dean seems relatively happy playing dad and driving an unfamiliar pickup truck, but when Sam shows up, we’re pretty sure he doesn’t bring good news with him. After a year of hiding from Dean, it’ll take something serious for Sam to drag his brother back into hunting.

Ask Ausiello “Supernatural” Spoilers

Ask Ausiello posted some “Supernatural” spoilers fans can look forward to this upcoming season.

Question: Any news on what will happen to Castiel on Supernatural this season? —Minha
Ausiello:
This season’s first two episodes will be Cas-free, but the full-powered angel returns in spectacular fashion in week 3. “Let’s just say some angels show up that are not so happy,” teases exec producer Sera Gamble. “Cas and an angel go through a window at one point, and the result is not pretty. It’s a pretty spectacular stunt.”

“Supernatural” Season 5 DVD Review

The CW’s “Supernatural” is easily one of the more underrated shows of the ’00s. The problem is not only that genre product rarely gets the respect it deserves but you can forget about a program on The CW getting critical credit for a long time to come, if ever. The fact is that the network is the ugly duckling of TV right now, barely surviving on life support with anemic-and-dropping ratings for nearly all of its programming. Sure, some people talk about “Gossip Girl” and “The Vampire Diaries,” but even the water-cooler buzz there is getting quieter. And through all of this, most people haven’t noticed that “Supernatural” has been the best program on the network for a few years now. Sure, it’s hit-and-miss but it’s more often the former and WB’s DVD releases for the program have been above-average since year one.

“Supernatural” has been through a few ups and downs in terms of writing but the show’s staff took on the surely-daunting task of tackling not just your standard vampire, werewolves, and other urban legends that served as the program’s bread-and-butter the first few seasons but the big guns of Lucifer, the Apocalypse, and even the role of God. I wish the show had developed a more consistently-strong writing groove over the years, but the show has always thrived on the strength of its charming leads — Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, two young men who far-too-often get lumped in with the other two-dimensional personalities of their network. These guys are really good at what they do, making this kind of fun material look much easier to pull off than it actually is. With excellent production values, clever dialogue, and two incredibly-charismatic leads, “Supernatural” rises above most of its genre competition on the air right now and easily slams its lackluster brethren on The CW. Don’t ignore this program just because its network has been struggling or because it’s from a genre that you may not typically watch. It’s worth your time, especially with WB’s spectacular video/audio transfers and a few interesting special features.
