Both brothers are not equally guilty. It's true that neither knew the consequences of what they were doing. But while Dean may have broken the first seal, it was after 30 years of torture. Sam thought killing Lillith was a good thing (they all did), but he also spent a year drinking demon blood and there is no way around that being wrong. Sam saying he wanted to get away from Dean sounded like a good excuse to me. Dean is right to be watching Sam and he shouldn't be making excuses for it.
