If you told me a year ago that Supernatural would feature a battle between angels and demons that ended with one angel recapturing her grace, I would have thought you were speaking gibberish.  The mythology of the series has taken an interesting twist in the past 10 episodes, with plenty of talk about Heaven, Hell, angels and even God Himself.  Some fans aren’t particularly thrilled with all this Biblical mumbo jumbo, but I think it’s made Supernatural more epic than ever.  My only concern is that creator Eric Kripke may not be able to top this in the show’s fifth and possibly final season.  Once the boys outwit the armies of Heaven and Hell, what will they do for an encore?

Once it was revealed that Anna was a fallen angel, we learned all sorts of interesting things about the not-so-charmed lives of heavenly beings.  The thing I found most interesting was Anna’s admission that only four angels have ever laid eyes upon God.  Much like humans, the angels are expected to have faith that He exists.  I think it was important for Supernatural to clarify this point, lest this entire storyline become too controversial.  Now we know that the angels may not be following orders directly from the man Himself, which makes some of their actions more forgivable.  It also opens up the option that God may not exist, which should please any atheists and agnostics in the audience.

While all the talk about Heaven was interesting, it couldn’t compare to the extremely steamy scene in the back seat of the Impala.  These past two episodes could be renamed “The Winchester Sex Chronicles,” as they allowed both boys to get a little bit of action.  Even more intriguing is the fact that Sam had sex with a demon and Dean hooked up with an angel.  It already seemed like the brothers were moving toward different sides of this epic battle, but now they’ve really gone past the point of no return.

The episode didn’t end with the type of horrible cliffhanger I expected, but it did leave us with a few questions to ponder.  The first is what happened to Alastair.  I assumed he was dead, but some of my co-workers think that he may return to stir up more trouble.  When actor Mark Rolston was cast in the role, reports made it sound like Alastair would be a major villain throughout the rest of the season.  Could he really be gone after just two episodes?

The other question on my mind is what Ruby expects Sam to do to beef up his mojo.  Before Alastair came to wreak havoc, Ruby hinted that Sammy knows a way to increase his powers.  However, he didn’t want to do what she suggested, thinking it would be too dangerous.  What does Sam have to do to become more powerful, and why doesn’t he want to do it?

It’s going to be a long wait for Supernatural to return on January 15, but I think “Heaven and Hell” gave us more than enough to chew on for a couple months.  It also gave us a shirtless Jensen Ackles, which most people would agree is a nice bonus.

Best Scene: I know that Supernatural isn’t the type of show that will ever be nominated for Emmys, but the final scene made me wish Jensen Ackles would get awards thrown at him.  I’m not sure we’ve ever seen Dean unleash such a torrent of emotion, and Jensen sold it perfectly.  The show has been building toward this big reveal for a while, and though a few fans found it anticlimactic, I loved it.  I can’t wait to see if Dean’s confession brings the brothers closer together in the second half of the season.
